Will working a lot keep me from being depressed?

  • I am going back to the town where I went to university. I plan to work. I've been seriously depressed before, but while I was at school. I had a lot of free time then. I don't have any friends and I've never had a boyfriend. I'm fine being without friends, but I'd like to get married some day. If I worked, say, 60-70 hours a week, will I be less depressed because I'm busy. I've worked 90 hour weeks before and was physically fine. I'm 22

  • hm.i tried that once it did work but just know u cant run away from ur problems..hang out with ur co-workers..Ur time will come..i know cuz i been there went through that..

  • Can you use the distraction of work to keep you from thinking about those things that trouble you? Of course. Ppl do it all the time.

But is that the healthiest way to deal with those things that depress you...? Don't think so.

  • While working a lot may help to keep your mind off your depression for a while, what is causing you to feel depressed now will still be there. Eventually, your emotions may rise to the surface again.

You say that you have worked long hours before and it you were physically fine, but how did the hours affect you emotionally? Working long hours can affect your sleep and general health, which won't help your depression.

I suggest that you get professional help, regardless of whether you decide to take a job. Talk to your doctor, phone a depression helpline, or just open up to someone (you have made a great first step here).

I'm not sure where you are located, but you can try this site as a starting point: http://www.befrienders.org/ It has a search function for you to find helplines and other forms of support. Just click on your country and a list of helplines will pop up for you.

The friends and boyfriend will come in time. For now, you just need to look after yourself. Please take care.

  • no... drowning the actual cause of your depression will not make it go away.. it will plant it deeper in your soul, and make it harder to overcome. you need to find the source of your discontent. what if you dont like your job? it will only compound things. you cant put a band-aid over a soul-deep wound. take some time for yourself... be fair and honest and gentle with yourself.

  • The constant physical action of working doesn't allow you any time for pondering or thinking, thus "fills" out your life. But its not a fix. You need to find out what is the base cause of your anxiety to really cure your depression. Then your work can be put toward a good use.
