welcome to my space

I have a sweet cat, and a terror?

  • My husband and I adopted our female cat Momo around march of this year. Momo was 10 weeks. She was pretty timid, both my husband and I have had cats in our lives and so she seemed timid compared to the average cat.She was always very sweet though, she never clawed at you or bit you or anything of the sort.
Than around August we thought lets just get one more. We got our male kitten Appa. He was absolutly adorable, and affectionate. He was about 6 weeks old at the time. I know that that is probably the stem of his problems. Anyways long story short Appa is a terror.
It started out that he really didn't claw or bite us, but he constantly bit and clawed Momo. It of course was always playful, but Momo would always meow angrily, but being the peaceul cat she is she would never hurt him or give him a warning bite. She would actually lick him and give out yelps if he bit to hard, or run away.
Appe has issues in that he is always biting and scratching us. I know it is playful but I think he knows we are bothered by it. How do I stop that behavior. Appa also does things to get attention. When your not looking he'll grab on to the lamp shade. Than when you look over you clap or snap or tell him to get away. He'll look at you and just start scratching it up. He'll do this with paintings, ceiling fan cords. anything on the ground.
The worst thing he does is, at night due to his boughts of attacking us in our sleep, we have had to close our bedroom door at night to keep him put(we leave Momo out with him). All throughout the night he'll be out there scratching the carpet outside our door, shredding it up. and crying. We let him in, but than he'll either attack our face or feet playfully, (but with all of his claws) and we have to kick him out again. we usually don't let him in. I love my kitten but his bad habits and bad behavior are very destroying my house and causing us to get little sleep at night. I don't want him destroying our carpet. Also I think he has a seperation anxiety because when I get into the shower, he will usually sit outside the curtain and cry. He makes the most pathetic and sweet cry ever, but I wish he didn't feel that way.
Can anyone come up with an answere to make it stop.
    Any cat obidience training?
we plan to get Appa fixed in about a month, he'll be five months by than. we are also thinking of declawing him. But I'm not sure if declawing is a good or bad thing for a cat. any help would be wonderful

  • dont declaw him because he will have no way of defended himself if every get out side which could mean death and it hurt them very badly he will mellow out and be very sweet once he is fixed so i would just hold out in till hes fixed and about the separation anxiety hes probaly scared he will go back to the pound so just love him and give him plenty of attention

good luck and the best wishes

  • Get rid of the cat, or get it de-clawed. IF there is absolutely nothing you can do about him harming the other cat and destroying your house, you have to stop it.

Try disciplining him a little while longer, like a squirt bottle or little slaps on his butt when he does something wrong. If it doesn't work, you know what you have to do.

Maybe he will mellow out as he gets older, or neutered.

  • My male cat was kind of like that when he was a kitten, we adopted him at 12 weeks. He has mellowed out (he is now about 2 yrs old) but he is still quite playful and can be aggressive with the other cats, he doesn't hurt them but he chases them and wrestles with them. He also loves attention, will scratch at our door at night and all that as well (he used to play with our feet and attack them but has also stopped doing that as he got older). We have to put him in the basement sometimes if he won't stop scratching at our door during the night. So yours may mellow out a little with age but he will probably always be a playful more dominant type and an attention seeker.

You have to get him neutered ASAP. Also I would not declaw, I know the scratching stinks but they say cats who are declawed can start biting in defense as they have no other defense. Plus if he ever gets outside he will have nothing to defend himself.

Though I call my male cat a "pain" most of the time I do love him and he is a good cat and very loveable and he is the only one who will come lie on our lap.

  • i would get him neutered now, as you can do it now at 8 weeks.. I would not declaw him.. yet.. it is a very traumatic and painful event, but if the clawing does not stop, then consider it.. you could also cut his nails so they are not so sharp.. We do it on our two youngest kittens.
Neutering him may take the "wild boy" out of him and make him a little more acceptable of your female cat, as I am sure his hormones are starting to kick in and he is just following nature right now.
The water bottle trick is the best cat deterrent i have ever found.. you have to get one that shoots a small stream, a misting bottle just confuses them .. lol..
the combination of the water bottle , and neutering should do the trick and calm him down.. I have also found, since we always have sick kitties with claws, that finding a corner that the kitten likes to scratch up and covering it with a door mat (we staple gunned it) it will protect your walls, also maybe just get a scratching post and covering it with catnip and reward him with reassuring talk that he may just stick to sharpening his claws on this. Good luck

P.s. LOTS of cat toys will keep him occupied and tire him out

  • He's less than five months old, chances are good that he will calm down as he reaches adulthood. If you can put up with it that long, just wait it out. It's also not true that you can't train cats. Cats are very smart, and they know when they've done something wrong. Discipline him when he does something you don't like. Cats hate a squirt of water, maybe get a water bottle and spray him when he misbehaves. When he cries ignore him. Its like when a little kid throws a hissy fit when they don't get what they want. If you ignore them they will eventually get tired of it. Just give him time to grow up. Give him lots of love and attention, but let him know when he does something that is unacceptable. Make sure he has plenty of toys, and play with him often. Get him a scratching post, or better yet, a cat "jungle gym." Put cat nip on it to tempt him to play with it. He's probably very bored and meows because he wants you to play with him. He's tearing up the carpet out of frustration. Clawing is an instinct. Cats have to do it. Just make sure he has an alternative to the carpet.
Please please do not declaw your cat!! In some countries it is illegal! It is extremely cruel. It's the equivalent of cutting off the last joints of your fingers. It is very painful, and traumatizing to the cat! My parents made the mistake of declawing two of their cats. We didn't realize what it involved at the time. The cats were in so much pain, it was truly heartbreaking. Please don't put your cat through that pain!
If you can't handle taking care of this kitten, maybe you should find another home that can. You can get an older calmer cat that won't be destructive. Or get him another kitten around his age to play with.

  • I have a cat that was like this when he was younger. It took months of working with my cat to teach him what "NO!" means. In a firm voice, I would say NO! and go stop him from doing whatever it was that I didn't want. He was a slow learner, but I would say about 3 months later I could tell he knew what I meant. He is really good now, hes about 4. I can just look at him with an angry stare and he stops doing whatever it is. He got much calmer after being neutered, but still a little crazy. He is still a stinker though, and very smart really. He will reach under my bedroom door when I lock him out and pull the door stopper spring thing to wake me up. Also knows how to open most doors. I had him declawed but I would avoid it if its not absolutely necessary. Check out pictures of how a declawing is done online and I promise it will change your mind too. I feel really bad that I did it now.
