User titles

  • I have modified the default user titles. Your title depends on your number of posts. As I am interested in sumo, I have chosen sekitori ranks:

    Yokozuna (grand champion, 1000 posts)
    Oozeki (champion, 500 posts)
    Sekiwake (junior champion, 250 posts)
    Komusubi (100 posts)
    Maegashira (50 posts)
    Juuriyou (40 posts)
    Makushita (30 posts)
    Sandanme (20 posts)
    Jonidan (10 posts)
    Jonukuchi

    :)

  • ok becuase i was bored and no one had made this yet. i put the ranks up with their respective pictures. so now it should be easier to compare the colors to the ranks and if you dont read japanese, easily tell what that kanji on your "belt" means.

    http://www.jref.com/forum/images/ranks/Kamisama.gif : 2000 posts : Kami-sama (divinity)

    :sorry:

Which makes Thomas and Maciamo more than Divine.... :D

By the way this is pretty much an old thread...

  • Are those colors the same colors used in the Judo belt system? If so, what does red stand for?

Red stands for god, which is outside the system. :p

  • Well, as much as I like being named after "one of the most powerful pieces", I've got to say that I much prefer being an Angry Postal Worker. I've tried changing it back using in my profile, but no go. I've just recovered from a crippling injury. How could this happen to me? *sob*

Still, it is nice to be one of the most powerful pieces in Shogi. Makes a change from being sullen and hungry. Angry, I mean. Angry.

  • Nobility on our egalitarian board?! LOL, I thought of that too, will consult my wise books.

  • Great job, Maciamo! (at the cost of being demoted to green belt due to "junk posting" and having to go on a "conscious-posting" [low carb? god no!] diet...)

  • If it is to be manga titles, maybe base them on mecha... Big O perhaps at the top no, the angels from evangellion, Aestivali (not sure of the spelling, from Nadeshiko), the suits from bubble gum crisis etc and so forth.

  • Red stands for god, which is outside the system. :p

Makes sense. I can see the village girl virgins prostrating themselves upon some hard, stone cold altar ready to make the sacrifice and thus let the crimson-red blood stain flow over your title....

  • Yeah, the colour ranking makes it much easier for those of us who can't be bothered going to check which rank is which... lol :p

Lol, I use to copy the rank names and put them into Japanese dictionaries just to find out what the hell they were because I had no clue. XD Now all I have to do is remember the color order! :D

  • well AnimeX has Dragonball, NERV, Naturo, Otaku, Magical Girl and Shonen

for examples here is a link:

    http://www.animex.com/interactive/mb/index.cfm

for DBZ they have power levels with the specics
for Otaku they have Otakism level
Shonen/Naturo/NERV had different levels in the series
Magical Girl is all type of females in anime

  • These are just the default titles. You can change your user title to whatever you please through your Control Panel.
    :)

  • thanks... i was about to ask what's each user title representing... ;)

  • I found a nice solution: images. :)

See the example below, it's a TT font set:

  • I'm kind of glad I'm exempt from the color code. Especially after my post count was cut by about 500... :p

Not that post count matters to me, mind you...

  • Hey, look! That signature thing works! Cheers Thomas. Will the wonders of modern technology never end. . .

    I'm feeling kind of guilty for wanting to get rid of my lovely new shogi piece, especially considering everyone's positive response to them. I have zero patience with the internet (especially at the moment, because it's slowed almost to a crawl . . . it might be quicker shouting really loudly from a tall hill in response to your posts. . .) so I'll pass my idea on to Thomas, who clearly has more patience than me, and is less likely to chew pieces out of his monitor;

wouldn't it be great if there were online Shogi games? We could set up a little Japan Reference Tournament and you could all wipe the floor with me. Am I a shogi hustler, or am I genuinely crap at cerebral games? Well, there's only one way to find out . . . over to you Thomas.

It's nice of you to have such confidence in me, Debs, but I'd best warn you that I'm a creative swearer once too many things get on top of me. On the subject of which, you're the perfect person to ask . . . do the Irish REALLY say "feck"?

  • unless a page is made showing the levels

  • Must be an art deco version, lol!

  • yes this is an excellent choice thomas, I really like this:clap:

  • Good idea for the colour. What about the karate/judo belt order : white, yellow. orange, green, blue, brown, black, then "dan" after that ?

That would be neat. Their both colors and ranks that go in order so it would work!

  • About color ranking. Maybe you could still have different categories for your post level but the color of the rank goes through out all. So if someone is a 'Super Saiyan' and some else is "Super Sailor Moon' but both of their rank colors are red then you know they are at the same rank.

  • Hi Meverie, it's good to know that we have a member who actually has a clue about shogi, lolol!

Thanks for your advise, I will try to apply to our user title system as soon as possible.

  • Glad you all like them! :)

I'll post a detailed description of each title later today. I'll also try to enlarge them, and they shall be displayed for forum members too.

  • Hm, what about using shogi pieces:

    O-sho (Jeweled General): 1000 posts
    Kin-sho (Gold General): 500 posts
    Gin-sho (Silver General): 250 posts
    Kei (Honorable Horse): 100 posts
    Kyosha (Lance): 50 posts
    Hisha (Flying Chariot): 25 posts
    Kaku (Angel Goer): 10 posts
    Fu (Foot Soldier)

Additionally, we could display the corresponding shogi piece under each user name.

  • The red is a low level belt in some styles, I believe. The reason that masters wear it is to show that they have gone so far that they have come back to the basics, or something along those lines. At least
that's what I remember reading a few years ago.

  • Hm, online shogi tournaments... I'll think of it next weekend back home. :)

  • whoa,,so the red names means like they're in charge of this site,eh?

    cool,,,

REMEMBER, when a red letter member is on line, you must keep your head bowed down and eyes averted at all times or it's "OFF WITH YOUR HEAD!" !

    Frank

  • now i know why my user title suddenly changed to some unknown japanese name. ha!

  • hooray! I LOVE Shogi! (in inverse proportion to its skill of me...lol)

Here is the rule and ranks of Shogi. it extremely resembles western chess.
    http://www.m-net.ne.jp/~sekita/help/rules.html

    @Thomas san

It may be easier to understand if to get corresponded with them all to ranks of western chess.
also I suppose it is better to replace the order of the ranks, as follows.
coz I'd have a mad more if my Rook or Bishop was captured rather than Gold or Silver at least...lol

    O-sho (King)
    Hisha (Rook)
    Kaku (Bishop)
    Kin (Gold General)
    Gin (Silver General)
    Keima (Knight)
    Kyosha (Lance)
    Fu (Pawn)

I wonder how I can see page 2 and 3..?

  • Several steps over the "RED" belt is the beloved title "DONATOR" !! All you need to clain the honor is a credit card; yours, your folks, your best friend's, your lover's.

  • Neat. I like them.

  • So, what do the new symbols mean?

I left my kanji dictionary in my other pants. :)

  • ok becuase i was bored and no one had made this yet. i put the ranks up with their respective pictures. so now it should be easier to compare the colors to the ranks and if you dont read japanese, easily tell what that kanji on your "belt" means.

ehh i dunno where the kami pic is, hopefully someone will edit it in correctly :sorry:

Are those colors the same colors used in the Judo belt system? If so, what does red stand for?

  • That's a good idea, but I am affraid few people will understand (even less than the sumo, but I am still more confused by anime titles !). It would look better in kanji, but not everybody has a computer that reads kanji :(

  • I'l try again hehe,,
found this pic of a shogi board,, I was quite surprised at the shape of the peices,

  • The only problem with having multiple ranking systems is that nobody will be able to figure out how high which rank is, thus making the whole system a bit obsolete... :smug:

  • lol weren't they talking about it in another thread?
    Anyway good job Jeisan ^^
Even for a person who don't know a single japanese word like me it's easier to understand :D

  • hey glenn we have purple names now, that must mean we're grapes...?

mwthomas, im not sure of the red color choice, but i know someone who does, his name is maciamo, he even used red letters to spell it out. i think he likes firetrucks.

  • Thanks! I'll see what I can do. ;)

  • Thanks Debs, glad you like it.

  • Well you guys are right about one thing i have no idea what is going on but i must say i do like them! they are very neat! :)

  • Oops ! this needs updating too.

The new usertitles are based on the Japanse nobility titles as follow :

    0 post : Heimin (commoner)
    25 posts : Jinushi (landlord)
    100 posts : Samurai (knight)
    200 posts : Danshaku (baron)
    350 posts : Shishaku (viscount)
    500 posts : Hakushaku (count)
750 posts : Koushaku (duke, prince)
1000 posts : Koutaishi (crown prince)
    1500 posts : Tennou (emperor)
    2000 posts : Kami-sama (divinity)

Of course, most of these titles (from danshaku to koushaku) were only created from Meiji and disappeared after WWII. I didn't add daimyou or taikun as these pre-Meiiji tittles would have overlapped on the others. Samurai is already a small anachronism, as samurai had just lost their priviledges when Western-style nobility titles appeared in Japan. Anyhow, just for forum use. :bluush:

  • i don't get a single word of those titles :sorry:

  • Hairyneville,,, sorry to hear that you had an injury too, glad to chat to you again! hey you should see our most recent angry postal worker walking our streets and delivering my mail, his face is so tence and squished up that I'm afraid to say "good morning " are you working here (Nr.Ireland) at this present time?? :D  JOKE,JOKE!!!. I'm sure that you would prove not so angry if you where here,, cause I know that your a big softie!:rose:
@Shogi,,,, This game sounds facinating! I play Chess, not so regular, but I find it a kind of "mental kick-start" probably due to the fact that most of my day is spent with my two wonderful kids and the biggest challenge I get is convincing my 5year old son(kevin) that he is "TIERD" and its "BED-TIME" haha, but Shogi !! I must fine out more about it, I'm sure that its different peices and I know from what I have read that the movements are different, an investagation is due!:note:

  • well maybe u can have multiple rank systems so people can pick from stuff like Sumo, Normal, J-Pop, Anime, ETC

lot of site have ranking choices so maybe that could be an idea ^_^

  • I like them too. Excellent choice Thomas !

Hmm, I am nearing the Kinshou title... Do you think it's possible to add the title under "advisor" ? What about making the image a little bit bigger, as kanji appear quite small and almost unreadable on my screen.

  • That sounds like a good idea, I will check if I can customize the forum software to allow multiple ranking systems.

Any idea for anime-related user titles?

    :)

  • Red stands for god, which is outside the system. :p

It's no coincidence that I picked bordeaux red for the admin usergroup, lolol.

  • Are those colors the same colors used in the Judo belt system? If so, what does red stand for?
Red belt does exist in ju-jitsu...

  • whoa,,so the red names means like they're in charge of this site,eh?

    cool,,,

  • Sorry to hear about your injury, I hope you're better! Unfortunately, custom titles had to be removed, but there should be enough space for an Angry Postal Worker in your signature.

    :)

  • :giggle:
    :D,,,that's exactly I'll do,,,

    oh man,,,

  • Yeah, the colour ranking makes it much easier for those of us who can't be bothered going to check which rank is which... lol :p

  • Thanks for posting.I was wondering @~wink! what are these color indicator means.

  • Well, we could use "nobility" titles such as Tennou (Emperor), Shougun, Daimyou, Shoumyou, Samurai, Ronin, etc. I am not sure exactly how these titles were precisely attributed, so I'll have to check it.

I don't know if it's possible to add an option "gender", so that the Emperor become Empress (Kougyo), then we could have the ladies in waiting's rank like in the Tale of Genji or the name for the previous male titles's wife (which I don't know yet).

  • oh boy... i'm a hisha now.... haha...
i was as "kakuhyou" 5 minutes ago.. :o

  • That's true. Well, you could always associate specific colours or symbols with specific ranks. I will install the hack on my test board and see if it works.

/me adds one more item to the to-do-list.

Addendum: I just noticed that another J-related board uses exactly the same user titles. Now, I don't want to be accused of plagiarism, so if anyone can come up with new titles I'll be glad to implement them asap!

  • Good idea for the colour. What about the karate/judo belt order : white, yellow. orange, green, blue, brown, black, then "dan" after that ?

  • @ hairyneville,,,lololol, yip we say it all the fecking time,,,lolol
    Thomas sorry!!!
@Shogi ,,, thats a brilliant idea for a forum tournament, but maybe we need a Shogi master (boss) just to keep an eye on all our cheating haha, I wonder if there is a game of Shogi that can be played even against the computer for starters,(practise). As hairyneville said "over to you Thomas"

  • ok becuase i was bored and no one had made this yet. i put the ranks up with their respective pictures. so now it should be easier to compare the colors to the ranks and if you dont read japanese, easily tell what that kanji on your "belt" means.

  • OK, I have slightly enlarged the usertitle images, the kanji should now be visible. Forum members also display shogi graphics.

    What's Shogi??

Here's a small explanation from the World of Shogi (http://www.japanreference.com/cgi-bin/jump.cgi?ID=151):

Shogi is a Japanese board game played by two players. The object of the game is to capture the opponent's King. Shogi is played on a nine-by-nine board and each player has twenty pieces. Shogi is much like 'western' chess, but has some very interesting differences. One is that almost all pieces can promote to stronger pieces once they reach the opposite side of the board. The second very important difference is that when a piece is captured, it becomes a piece for the capturing side, and can be dropped back onto the board! This makes for a very exciting game, with an extremely low percentage of draws. Many strong Chess players have found Shogi to be a great game to play. Although played by millions in Japan, so far it is not so well known outside Japan.

    Pieces:

Ou-shou / Gyokushou ( Jeweled General ) - the O-sho (or Sho for short) is the primary piece in Shogi. It is the equivalent of the western King and must not put itself into check and must escape check when placed in that position. Mating the opponent's O-sho is the object of the game, resulting in a checkmate win. The O-sho moves one square in any direction - giving it the same moves as the modern King. It does not promote.

Kin-shou ( Gold General ) - the Kin-shou (or Kin for short) is considered one of the more powerful pieces in the game given its range of motion is almost as versatile as the Ou-shou's but has no check limitations. Both Kin start out as companions for the Ou-shou. The Kin can move one space in six directions - every direction but the backward diagonals. The Kin also does not promote but most other pieces promote to the powers of a Kin.

Gin-shou ( Silver General ) - the Gin-shou (or Gin for short) is a secondary starting companion of the Ou-shou and Kin. It can move one space in five directions - any of the four diagonal and straight forward. It promotes to a Nari-gin with the powers of a Kin.

Keima ( Honorable Horse ) - the Keima (or Kei for short) is the only piece in regular Shogi that can change direction in mid-movement. It is related to the original Horse pieces to the west but has a much more limited movement. The Kei moves two squares forward followed by one square to the left or right, leaping over the intervening spaces - it cannot move any other way so its motion is always forward across the board. It promotes to a Nari-kei with the powers of a Kin.

Kyosha / Yari ( Fragrant Chariot / Lance ) - the Kyosha has a simple movement. It can move forward any number of unobstructed squares (it may not leap) but can move in no other direction. The Kyosha promotes to a Nari-kyou with the same powers as a Kin.

Hisha ( Flying Chariot ) - the Hisha is one of the most powerful piece in regular Shogi. It may travel any number of unobstructed squares forward, backward, or sideways. It may not leap. Its moves are identical to the original Chariot pieces of India that both it and the modern western Rook are descended from. The Hisha was not present in the old Heian Shogi. It promotes to a Ryo-wo which is even more powerful.

Kakugyou ( Angel Goer ) - the Kakugyou (or Kaku for short) is also a powerful piece in regular Shogi. It may travel any number of unobstructed squares in the four diagonal directions. It may not leap. Its moves are identical to the modern Bishop (though almost definately not related). The Kaku was not present in the old Heian Shogi. It promotes to a Ryo-uma.

Fuhyou / Ho ( Foot soldier ) - the Fuhyou (or Fu for short) are in front of the more powerful pieces, starting on the third rank and at the entrance to the opponent's promotion zone. The Fu move straight forward one square at a time and have no other option of movement. Though they are the Pawns of Shogi they do not capture differently than they move and thus can never move diagonally. They also do not possess the initial double-step of modern western Pawns. They promote to a Tokin.
