Which makes Thomas and Maciamo more than Divine.... :D
By the way this is pretty much an old thread...
Red stands for god, which is outside the system. :p
Still, it is nice to be one of the most powerful pieces in Shogi. Makes a change from being sullen and hungry. Angry, I mean. Angry.
Makes sense. I can see the village girl virgins prostrating themselves upon some hard, stone cold altar ready to make the sacrifice and thus let the crimson-red blood stain flow over your title....
Lol, I use to copy the rank names and put them into Japanese dictionaries just to find out what the hell they were because I had no clue. XD Now all I have to do is remember the color order! :D
for examples here is a link:
http://www.animex.com/interactive/mb/index.cfm
for DBZ they have power levels with the specics
for Otaku they have Otakism level
Shonen/Naturo/NERV had different levels in the series
Magical Girl is all type of females in anime
:)
See the example below, it's a TT font set:
Not that post count matters to me, mind you...
I'm feeling kind of guilty for wanting to get rid of my lovely new shogi piece, especially considering everyone's positive response to them. I have zero patience with the internet (especially at the moment, because it's slowed almost to a crawl . . . it might be quicker shouting really loudly from a tall hill in response to your posts. . .) so I'll pass my idea on to Thomas, who clearly has more patience than me, and is less likely to chew pieces out of his monitor;
wouldn't it be great if there were online Shogi games? We could set up a little Japan Reference Tournament and you could all wipe the floor with me. Am I a shogi hustler, or am I genuinely crap at cerebral games? Well, there's only one way to find out . . . over to you Thomas.
It's nice of you to have such confidence in me, Debs, but I'd best warn you that I'm a creative swearer once too many things get on top of me. On the subject of which, you're the perfect person to ask . . . do the Irish REALLY say "feck"?
That would be neat. Their both colors and ranks that go in order so it would work!
Thanks for your advise, I will try to apply to our user title system as soon as possible.
I'll post a detailed description of each title later today. I'll also try to enlarge them, and they shall be displayed for forum members too.
O-sho (Jeweled General): 1000 posts
Kin-sho (Gold General): 500 posts
Gin-sho (Silver General): 250 posts
Kei (Honorable Horse): 100 posts
Kyosha (Lance): 50 posts
Hisha (Flying Chariot): 25 posts
Kaku (Angel Goer): 10 posts
Fu (Foot Soldier)
Additionally, we could display the corresponding shogi piece under each user name.
that's what I remember reading a few years ago.
cool,,,
REMEMBER, when a red letter member is on line, you must keep your head bowed down and eyes averted at all times or it's "OFF WITH YOUR HEAD!" !

Here is the rule and ranks of Shogi. it extremely resembles western chess.
http://www.m-net.ne.jp/~sekita/help/rules.html
@Thomas san
It may be easier to understand if to get corresponded with them all to ranks of western chess.
also I suppose it is better to replace the order of the ranks, as follows.
coz I'd have a mad more if my Rook or Bishop was captured rather than Gold or Silver at least...lol
O-sho (King)
Hisha (Rook)
Kaku (Bishop)
Kin (Gold General)
Gin (Silver General)
Keima (Knight)
Kyosha (Lance)
Fu (Pawn)
I wonder how I can see page 2 and 3..?
This solicitation is bought to you by a regular ol nobody member, not staff or owners. Give now and you will get on Santa's "good boys & girls" list!
Uncle Frank

Are those colors the same colors used in the Judo belt system? If so, what does red stand for?
found this pic of a shogi board,, I was quite surprised at the shape of the peices,
Anyway good job Jeisan ^^
Even for a person who don't know a single japanese word like me it's easier to understand :D
mwthomas, im not sure of the red color choice, but i know someone who does, his name is maciamo, he even used red letters to spell it out. i think he likes firetrucks.
The new usertitles are based on the Japanse nobility titles as follow :
0 post : Heimin (commoner)
25 posts : Jinushi (landlord)
100 posts : Samurai (knight)
200 posts : Danshaku (baron)
350 posts : Shishaku (viscount)
500 posts : Hakushaku (count)
750 posts : Koushaku (duke, prince)
1000 posts : Koutaishi (crown prince)
1500 posts : Tennou (emperor)
2000 posts : Kami-sama (divinity)
Of course, most of these titles (from danshaku to koushaku) were only created from Meiji and disappeared after WWII. I didn't add daimyou or taikun as these pre-Meiiji tittles would have overlapped on the others. Samurai is already a small anachronism, as samurai had just lost their priviledges when Western-style nobility titles appeared in Japan. Anyhow, just for forum use. :bluush:
@Shogi,,,, This game sounds facinating! I play Chess, not so regular, but I find it a kind of "mental kick-start" probably due to the fact that most of my day is spent with my two wonderful kids and the biggest challenge I get is convincing my 5year old son(kevin) that he is "TIERD" and its "BED-TIME" haha, but Shogi !! I must fine out more about it, I'm sure that its different peices and I know from what I have read that the movements are different, an investagation is due!:note:
lot of site have ranking choices so maybe that could be an idea ^_^
Hmm, I am nearing the Kinshou title... Do you think it's possible to add the title under "advisor" ? What about making the image a little bit bigger, as kanji appear quite small and almost unreadable on my screen.
Any idea for anime-related user titles?
:)
It's no coincidence that I picked bordeaux red for the admin usergroup, lolol.
Red belt does exist in ju-jitsu...
cool,,,
:)
:D,,,that's exactly I'll do,,,
oh man,,,
I don't know if it's possible to add an option "gender", so that the Emperor become Empress (Kougyo), then we could have the ladies in waiting's rank like in the Tale of Genji or the name for the previous male titles's wife (which I don't know yet).
i was as "kakuhyou" 5 minutes ago.. :o
/me adds one more item to the to-do-list.
Addendum: I just noticed that another J-related board uses exactly the same user titles. Now, I don't want to be accused of plagiarism, so if anyone can come up with new titles I'll be glad to implement them asap!
Thomas sorry!!!
@Shogi ,,, thats a brilliant idea for a forum tournament, but maybe we need a Shogi master (boss) just to keep an eye on all our cheating haha, I wonder if there is a game of Shogi that can be played even against the computer for starters,(practise). As hairyneville said "over to you Thomas"

What's Shogi??
Here's a small explanation from the World of Shogi (http://www.japanreference.com/cgi-bin/jump.cgi?ID=151):
Shogi is a Japanese board game played by two players. The object of the game is to capture the opponent's King. Shogi is played on a nine-by-nine board and each player has twenty pieces. Shogi is much like 'western' chess, but has some very interesting differences. One is that almost all pieces can promote to stronger pieces once they reach the opposite side of the board. The second very important difference is that when a piece is captured, it becomes a piece for the capturing side, and can be dropped back onto the board! This makes for a very exciting game, with an extremely low percentage of draws. Many strong Chess players have found Shogi to be a great game to play. Although played by millions in Japan, so far it is not so well known outside Japan.

Pieces:
Ou-shou / Gyokushou ( Jeweled General ) - the O-sho (or Sho for short) is the primary piece in Shogi. It is the equivalent of the western King and must not put itself into check and must escape check when placed in that position. Mating the opponent's O-sho is the object of the game, resulting in a checkmate win. The O-sho moves one square in any direction - giving it the same moves as the modern King. It does not promote.
Kin-shou ( Gold General ) - the Kin-shou (or Kin for short) is considered one of the more powerful pieces in the game given its range of motion is almost as versatile as the Ou-shou's but has no check limitations. Both Kin start out as companions for the Ou-shou. The Kin can move one space in six directions - every direction but the backward diagonals. The Kin also does not promote but most other pieces promote to the powers of a Kin.
Gin-shou ( Silver General ) - the Gin-shou (or Gin for short) is a secondary starting companion of the Ou-shou and Kin. It can move one space in five directions - any of the four diagonal and straight forward. It promotes to a Nari-gin with the powers of a Kin.
Keima ( Honorable Horse ) - the Keima (or Kei for short) is the only piece in regular Shogi that can change direction in mid-movement. It is related to the original Horse pieces to the west but has a much more limited movement. The Kei moves two squares forward followed by one square to the left or right, leaping over the intervening spaces - it cannot move any other way so its motion is always forward across the board. It promotes to a Nari-kei with the powers of a Kin.
Kyosha / Yari ( Fragrant Chariot / Lance ) - the Kyosha has a simple movement. It can move forward any number of unobstructed squares (it may not leap) but can move in no other direction. The Kyosha promotes to a Nari-kyou with the same powers as a Kin.
Hisha ( Flying Chariot ) - the Hisha is one of the most powerful piece in regular Shogi. It may travel any number of unobstructed squares forward, backward, or sideways. It may not leap. Its moves are identical to the original Chariot pieces of India that both it and the modern western Rook are descended from. The Hisha was not present in the old Heian Shogi. It promotes to a Ryo-wo which is even more powerful.
Kakugyou ( Angel Goer ) - the Kakugyou (or Kaku for short) is also a powerful piece in regular Shogi. It may travel any number of unobstructed squares in the four diagonal directions. It may not leap. Its moves are identical to the modern Bishop (though almost definately not related). The Kaku was not present in the old Heian Shogi. It promotes to a Ryo-uma.
Fuhyou / Ho ( Foot soldier ) - the Fuhyou (or Fu for short) are in front of the more powerful pieces, starting on the third rank and at the entrance to the opponent's promotion zone. The Fu move straight forward one square at a time and have no other option of movement. Though they are the Pawns of Shogi they do not capture differently than they move and thus can never move diagonally. They also do not possess the initial double-step of modern western Pawns. They promote to a Tokin.
